Primitivo di Manduria is a DOC wine whose production is allowed in the province of Taranto, in particular in the south-eastern area of the Ionian province. The origins of the vine remain uncertain, even if it is said that it was the Greeks who brought it to Puglia over two thousand years ago.
The initial production of the vine can originally be traced back to the lands of the countryside of Manduria, Maruggio, Sava and Lizzano as well as in central Puglia in the surroundings of Gioia del Colle. Primitivo is often trained in saplings, which guarantees a very low production but of extreme quality. It is a vine that tends to be very long-lived and it is possible to find it even older than 80 years.
Colour: intense red, tending towards purplish and orange with ageing. It has an intense fruity aroma of red fruits (cherries, morello cherries, plums) and small black fruits (currants, cassis), dried figs, bay leaves, licorice, characteristic. The flavour is fruity, pleasant, full, harmonious, tending towards velvety with ageing. The Primitivo di Manduria dry DOC, 16% degrees for the Primitivo di Manduria Dolce Naturale DOCG and even 18% degrees for the Primitivo di Manduria Liqueur DOCG.
