Apulia ~ Primitivo Salentino

Primitivo bears a striking resemblance to the California Zinfandel grape variety. DNA testing and extensive historical research have confirmed this common origin. The origins of Primitivo are uncertain, but it is believed that the vine is of Dalmatian origin and that it was brought to Puglia more than 2000 years ago by the ancient Illyrian people.

Its name certainly derives from the earliness of ripening of the grapes. It is a red grape variety that ripens much earlier than the others, already in mid-August, from the Latin "Primativus" precisely due to its early ripening.
