Umbria ~ Sagrantino

The vine has been cultivated in Umbria since the Middle Ages. The first testimonies date back to the year 1100, and there are two different theories about its origin. The first claims that he came from Asia Minor, from where he arrived in Umbria in the wake of Franciscan friars.

The second considers it of Greek origin, and it would have been imported by Byzantine monks. In any case, the history of Sagrantino is linked to the importance of religious communities in Umbria and it seems that even the name "Sagrantino" refers to its sacred use during religious functions. Sagrantino is one of the most tannic varieties in the world and gives rise to wines with a very dark purple colour
